Asheville Microbrewery Tour
A talented guide will accompany the group to visit Asheville’s Best Microbreweries according to the following itinerary:
2:15 PM Depart for the Asheville Microbrewery Tour – please meet at the Vanderbilt Wing Atrium, 7th level
2:30 PM Arrive at Highland Brewery located in downtown Asheville
In December 1994, when downtown Asheville was sleepy, Highland rolled out its first kegs from the basement to the alley. Built almost entirely of retrofitted dairy equipment, our original brewery could produce up to 6,500 barrels of beer per year in about 12,000 square feet of space. Today, we have capacity to brew over 60,000 barrels annually with room to grow. Until 1998, our beer was available only in kegs and hand-filled 22-oz. bottles. (We still fill our liter bottles by hand today.) That year, we added a four-head bottling machine which enabled us to start packaging in 12-oz. bottles. In 2002, a used Krones bottling line was installed, capable of filling 7,200 12-oz. bottles per hour. Although we brewed twice daily, four days per week, the demand for our beer continued to exceed supply. We brew four times a day, five days per week on a 50-bbl brew house. Our cellar has 24 fermenters, mostly 200bbls in size, and growing. We can bottle up to 320 bottles per minute, averaging 800 cases per hour. Our bottling line is a state-of-the-art 2015 KHS 48-valve rotary machine. Our can line is a 2008 Vimercati 14-valve rotary canner with the capability of 70 cans per minute.
3:45 PM Arrive at Hi-Wire Big Top Brewery located in Historic Biltmore
Located a half a mile from the Biltmore Estate, Hi-Wire Brewing opened the 27,000 square foot Big Top Taproom & Production Facility in the summer of 2015. This Big Top brings the brewing process to life by giving craft beer drinkers the opportunity to enjoy a taste of Hi-Wire’s approachable and balanced ales and lagers beside the tanks where they were created. Our flagship and seasonal offerings are brewed to be balanced and approachable, how brewers have been striving to brew beers for thousands of years. Brewing beers with a connection to the past is important to us. We love to brew traditional styles that honor the heritage of our craft and pay respect to those who have crafted beer before us. Yet, as an American craft brewer, we are elated to participate in the culture of experimentation that has developed here. With the opening of the Big Top Production Brewery & Taproom, our South Slope Specialty Brewery has become an experimental hub for creating exciting barrel-aged sour and wild ales in addition to housing our pilot system for recipe development and fun small-batch creations. We love taking care of our people and giving our staff an environment to work where they feel empowered.
5:00 PM Arrive at Green Man Brewing located in downtown Asheville South slope
Award winning ales since 1997, Green Man was founded in downtown Asheville, originally as a brew-pub. New ownership and a fresh approach spurred evolutionary change at Green Man in 2010. No longer a brew pub, Green Man was able to focus on production, distribution and growth. With the help of the original brewer, John Stuart, and his team, Green Man has evolved into a respected and well-known brewery, known for consistent, traditional ales with a constant eye on quality. Using English and Belgian yeasts and specialty grains gives the beers their unique appeal and distinctive style. These brewers are known for their Gold Ale, Pale Ale, IPA (India Pale Ale), ESB (Extra Special Bitter), Stout, Porter, and Cask Conditioned Ale.
